This presentation addresses how geography and geology are the foundation of effective construction stormwater management; and that a BMP that works in one region may fail in another. Using North Carolina as the primary case study, it walks through the state's distinct physiographic regions (Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Sandhills, and the Fall Line transition zone), covering how soils, topography, rainfall patterns, receiving water sensitivity, and regulatory structure differ across those regions and what those differences mean for BMP selection and site management. The presentation also draws comparisons to California's CGP framework and briefly surveys other states with similar physiographic diversity challenges. It is aimed at both beginner and experienced audiences and is intended to prompt practitioners to critically consider regional conditions before defaulting to standard practice.
