Managing stormwater is essential for reducing runoff, preventing erosion, and meeting environmental requirements. Across the construction sector, professionals face the ongoing challenge of protecting water quality while complying with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. This workshop will highlight how innovative approaches can strengthen stormwater practices and advance Nature-Based Solutions.

The City of San Diego, one of the few jurisdictions with its own compost facility (The Miramar Greenery), is leading efforts to integrate compost-based products into stormwater management strategies. Compost applications not only preserve topsoil and prevent erosion, but also filter runoff, bind pollutants, manage nutrients and salinity, and suppress pathogens.

Participants will learn how compost socks and other compost-based Best Management Practices BMPs provide effective and sustainable alternatives to conventional controls such as silt fences and straw wattles. Delivered by the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department, this presentation is designed for construction professionals and municipal agencies seeking to move beyond conventional specifications toward innovative, sustainable stormwater solutions. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of the benefits of incorporating compost-based products into compliance strategies while supporting resilient soils and cleaner waterways.
