Forever chemicals like PCBs and PFAS have become pervasive in our biosphere from constant recycling. Through introduction from multiple sources on land they get channeled into the storm water system and introduced into surface waters. Compounds like PCBs have been cycling in the air, soil and water for decades, leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Through innovative bioretention strategies that couple retrofitting retention/detention basins with phytorremediation wetland species, BMP practices can be used as a tool to reduce forever chemicals by 90%, preventing them from cycling in the environment.
