About the event
The management of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in stormwater presents a growing environmental and public health challenge. This paper examines the complexities of PFAS management in stormwater systems and explores potential strategies for mitigation.
Stormwater management expertise is crucial when addressing PFAS contamination, as these persistent chemicals require specialized treatment approaches. The integration of PFAS mitigation techniques with established stormwater management practices offers promising avenues for effective contamination control.
Drawing from industry experience, this paper highlights the importance of comprehensive site assessments, including thorough monitoring and sampling protocols. These assessments are fundamental in developing a strategic roadmap for PFAS treatment in stormwater systems. The roadmap typically encompasses the evaluation of site-specific conditions, contaminant profiles, and applicable regulatory frameworks.
Treatment options for PFAS in stormwater may include advanced filtration technologies such as granular activated carbon and ion exchange resins, both of which have demonstrated efficacy in PFAS removal. Other novel media such as FluoroSorb (organoclay) and Cyclopure (cyclodextrin) have also proven effective in PFAS mitigation in stormwater management. Emerging technologies like foam fractionation should also be considered for their potential to address PFAS contamination in stormwater contexts.
The development of a tailored treatment system requires a multifaceted approach, considering factors such as flow rates, contaminant concentrations, and site constraints. This presentation emphasizes the need for adaptive management strategies that can evolve with advancing scientific understanding and regulatory requirements.
By synthesizing stormwater management expertise with specialized knowledge in PFAS mitigation, this paper aims to contribute to the ongoing dialogue on effective PFAS management in stormwater systems, highlighting the importance of innovative, comprehensive, and sustainable solutions.
